Located in Houston, Texas, the Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine is the state’s first comprehensive institution to provide diagnostic and treatment services specifically tailored to patients with lung disease. The Lung Institute’s multidisciplinary team of top-tier specialists is led by David Sugarbaker, MD—world-renowned thoracic surgeon and lung-disease expert.
The Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine officially opened in July 2014. The Institute is based at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and is part of Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) St. Luke’s Health. The Lung Institute’s Director, David Sugarbaker, MD, left his posts as professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and chief of thoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to join the Baylor faculty and serve as the leader of the Lung Institute. Dr. Sugarbaker stated that part of what drew him to Baylor was “the opportunity to build something that never has been done before.” Dr. Sugarbaker describes the Lung Institute’s comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to assessing and treating patients with lung disease as a “new paradigm of care.”
The Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine offers patients individualized treatment plans guided by the expertise of a multispecialty team of professionals from the areas of medical oncology, pulmonary medicine, radiation oncology, radiology, and thoracic surgery and fueled by the latest advances in technology coupled with the resources of the internationally recognized genetics and genome sequencing programs established at Baylor.

Chair of surgery at Baylor, Dr. Todd Rosengart, has referred to Dr. Sugarbaker as “a world class innovator in the treatment of lung cancer, mesothelioma and lung disease.” Internationally recognized for his clinical and laboratory research of malignant pleural mesothelioma, as well as for his expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, Dr. Sugarbaker directs the mesothelioma clinical and research programs at the Lung Institute’s Mesothelioma Treatment Center. Together with his team, Dr. Sugarbaker’s aim is to develop more effective treatment strategies for mesothelioma.
