Mesothelioma and Asbestos in Georgia

Asbestos is a serious problem in Georgia not only because of asbestos industries, but also due to geology; the state contains numerous naturally-occurring asbestos deposits. Although the geologic processes that cause the formation of asbestiform minerals are common to all mountain ranges, the Appalachian Range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world; therefore, erosion over hundreds of millions of years has brought more asbestos closer to the surface. Most of these are in the northwestern part of the state, and run in a southeast line through the Atlanta area and ending around Westpoint Lake. Maps from the U.S. Geologic Survey also show an ”outlier” deposit near Milledgeville, about 50 miles northeast of Macon. If you believe you may have been at exposed to asbestos, you should seek medical attention from any of the qualified mesothelioma cancer centers in Georgia.

Industrial Asbestos Exposure in Georgia

Industrial exposure in Georgia was most likely at one of the numerous power generation facilities located throughout the state. It is also present in many of the state's older buildings, including the home of the Atlanta Journal. Georgia-Pacific, which is based in Atlanta, used large amounts of asbestos-containing materials in its paper and pulp mills located throughout the nation; much of this was contained in the “drying felts” that are used in paper manufacture. (Because the company has been the target of so much litigation, Georgia-Pacific has established a $665 million trust fund with a mesothelioma lawyer from which to pay claims; this is supposed to cover such liabilities through 2012.)

In addition, there are military bases (including Fort Benning) at which asbestos was used in numerous applications.

Mesothelioma Statistics in Georgia

During the last two decades of the 20th Century, 538 Georgians died from asbestos cancer; nearly 60% of these were from mesothelioma. Most of these casualties were in the more urbanized areas of the state; such deaths were rare in rural counties.
